Inspiration requires time

We photographed Toni Kostian’s food at the home of ceramicist Karin Widnäs in Fiskars.

Karin’s home, which also includes her studio, Studio Widnäs, is situated at the back of Fiskars at the end of a long sandy road. Next to Karin’s home is her ceramic museum KWUM, which is open to the public throughout the year. Both buildings, which were built of timber felled from Karin’s own plot of land, were designed by architect Tuomo Siitonen.

Karin Widnäs is known as a versatile and productive ceramicist. In addition to items for the table and small ornaments, Karin is also renowned as a designer of architectural ceramic elements. Karin’s red clay and raku tiles also play a major role in her ceramics at home and in the museum.

“Inspiration requires time” says Toni Kostian Chef of the Year and founder of Grön, Finland´s restaurant of the Year 2017 and 2018. He seeks inspiration for his work from nature and a relaxed state of mind.

“The best ideas are born when there is time for them. In the midst of daily work and haste, it´s difficult to come up with new perspectives”.

Kostian himself seeks ideas from nature, searching out different kinds of herbs and suitable vegetables to enliven his dishes. He does not need to wander far. Pristine ingredients can even be found on the islands of Kivinokka and Mustikkamaa in Helsinki. most important from a perspective of creativity, however, is a relaxed state of mind.

“I need time to think about menus, preservation methods and to make longer-term plans”.
